Journal of Science and Technology (Ghana) , 2012,
Abstract: The aim of this study is to present my observation of the common ear, nose and throat conditions in geriatrics, i.e. in the old age patients. This is a retrospective study analysis of 417 geriatric patients that presented at the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) clinic at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital between January 2006 and December 2010. The diagnosis in each patient was based on the history, clinical findings and investigations done on each patient at the time of presentation. The patients were aged between 65 and 93 years with a mean age of 74.6 years. The main presentation of these geriatric patients were otological conditions in 209 (50.1%), rhinological conditions in 118 (28.3%) and then pharyngolaryngological conditions in 90 (21.6%). Some of the common conditions include presbyacusis (16.7%), cerumen obturans (15.3%), allergic rhinitis (14.9%), pharyngolaryngitis (9.8%), rhinosinusitis (8.2%), foreign body in throat (7.0%) etc. With the current improvement in life style, the life expectancy is supposed to be increased. In effect the otolaryngologist is going to be affronted with these challenges.

Abstract: Introduction: In spite of the national target of achieving at least an 80% skilled delivery, skilled health providers attended to just 56.2% of deliveries in 2016 according to the Ghana Health Service annual report. The highest proportion of ANC registrants in the Akuapem South District in the Eastern Region of Ghana who sought skilled attendance at birth for the past 3 years has been about 36% as recorded in 2017. The fundamental factors responsible for this low skilled delivery in the district are poorly understood. The aim of this study, however, was to explore the factors that contribute to the uptake of skilled delivery in the Akuapem South District. Methodology: This cross-sectional study involved 371 women in the reproductive ages (15 - 49 years) who had delivered within the last 12 months preceding January 2019, and have been residents in the research communities during the period of pregnancy. A convenient sampling technique was used to select all 371 respondents from 15 communities. Structured questionnaires were used for the interviews by trained staff. Results: The prevalence of skilled delivery among respondents in this district as revealed by this study was 65.77% despite the 97.04% reported ANC attendance for at least once. Significant influencers of the uptake of skilled delivery were; maternal age, mother and partner’s educational level, partner’s occupation, the attitude of health staff/midwives, distance to the nearest health facility, transportation fare, and availability of medical equipment in the nearest health facility. Conclusion: Even though the overall ANC attendance was high, including women who made more than three visits, uptake of supervised delivery is a major challenge. There is, therefore, the need for the Akuapem South District Health Directorate to fully strengthen the adopted WHO’s goal that focuses on ANC at the individual facility levels.

Abstract: Adequate power supply is a vital factor in the development of the economic growth of every nation. However, due to changing hydrological conditions, inadequate fuel supplies and dilapidated infrastructure, developing countries face challenges in planning the power grid infrastructure needed to support rapidly growing urban populations. This research seeks to model the monthly electricity power generation for prediction purposes, by implementing stochastic process models on a historical series of monthly electricity power generation in Ghana. A detailed explanation of model selection and forecasting accuracy is presented. The SARIMA (1, 0, 0) × (0, 1, 1)12 model with an AIC score of 439.6995, a BIC score of 446.3537 and an AICc score of 440.8759, has been identified as an appropriate model for predicting monthly electricity power generation in Ghana. The range used was from 2015 to 2019 and it was validated with data from April to December of 2019. The predicted values for 2019 are relatively close to the observed values. Thus, the experimental results

Abstract: Background: Aesthetics is a primary consideration for patients seeking dental treatment. The size and shape of the maxillary anterior teeth have significant effects not only on the dental aesthetics, but also on the complete facial aesthetics of a person. To satisfy this expressed need, the “Golden Proportion” is a numerical value that is used as a rule in achieving dental aesthetics. In the last two decades, several studies have questioned the application of this rule in dentistry. Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the presence of “The Golden Proportion in the maxillary anterior teeth widths of clients visiting the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’s (KATH) Oral Health Directorate, Kumasi”. Materials and methods: A total of 100 dentulous subjects comprised of 50 males and 50 females, with ages ranging between 18 and 37 years were chosen using convenience sampling. Their dental casts were evaluated for apparent width by digital calliper. Results: The results of the study were expressed in relation to gender and tooth laterality. The results revealed that the golden proportion existed in 14% and 20% for the left and right respectively between the central incisor and the lateral incisor for males, 12% and 16% respectively for the left and right sides of females, 8% and 20% for the left and right sides respectively for males between the lateral incisor and canine and 16% and 20% for the left and right respectively for females. Conclusion: Comparison of our results with the established golden value shows differences between 1.618 and from the range that was acquired from this study. The results suggest that the rule of the golden proportion should not be strictly applied when restoring anterior teeth of patients in the dental clinic.

Journal of Science and Technology (Ghana) , 2008,
Abstract: The use of mercury containing skin toning creams is becoming increasingly popular among darkskinned women. The prolonged use of them over the years may cause serious health effects. In the study sixty nine (69) samples of skin toning creams were analysed for total mercury by cold vapour atomic absorption spectrophotometry using an automatic mercury analyzer. The concentration of mercury in the creams ranged from below 0.001 to 0.311 μg g-1. All the creams sampled had concentrations less than the US Food and Drug Administration's acceptable limit of 1 μg g-1. The low concentrations of mercury detected in the cream samples analysed therefore do not pose any potential mercury related health risk to the population particularly women

Abstract:

The rapid increase in the use of plastic materials in the recent years led to the accumulation of excessive amounts of plastic waste. The so-called thermoplastics such as PE, PP, PS, PVC and PET as well as materials that are derived from these are the type of plastic that is most used and consequently creates most of the waste. In this study, the original and waste forms of PE and PP plastic types have been chosen for thermal and catalytic degradation. As process parameter, 410oC - 450oC temperature interval and 600 mL/min constant flow rate nitrogen gas have been chosen as the carrier gas and the reaction time was considered to be 90 minutes for all experiments. Liquid products collected in experiments were separated by means of fractioned distillation process. For purposes of determining product distribution, the fractions, which were separated by distillation, were diluted in an appropriate solution for analysis of GC/MS. In the study conducted, it has been observed that the liquid product distribution obtained mainly consists of a mixture of saturated and unsaturated (heptane, heptane, octane, nonane, dodecane, etc.) hydrocarbons.
